Pediatric Pelvic Floor Therapy
What is it?
Pelvic Health or Pelvic Floor Therapy can include physical therapy and/or occupational therapy intervention to assist children with bowel and bladder issues. Pelvic floor therapy can help to improve constipation, daytime incontinence, bedwetting, and pelvic pain.
Who can benefit from Pelvic Floor Therapy?
Children experiencing:
– Daytime urinary or bowel incontinence
– Enuresis (bedwetting)
– Voiding dysfunction
– Urinary urgency and frequency
– Withholding behaviors
– Constipation
– Pelvic pain
How does a child qualify for Pelvic Floor Therapy?
– A script for Occupational Therapy or Physical Therapy from a medical provider is needed
– A visit with urologist and/or gastroenterologist are important and helpful to gain more information about the targeted issue, but not a requirement
Frequently Asked Questions
Explore our FAQs to find quick answers to common questions about our service.
Q. What age can you start pelvic floor therapy?
It is recommended that children be no younger than 4-5 years of age to start pelvic floor therapy as that is the age where the urogenital system really matures and there is an increase in bladder capacity.
Q. What does pelvic floor therapy look like?
Intervention varies based on each child but can include things like education on anatomy and systems, behavior modifications (diet and fluid intake), scheduling and timed voids, toileting strategies, pelvic floor muscle education and training, and biofeedback.
Q. What is biofeedback?
Biofeedback is any form of input that teaches you how to control the muscles of the body. With biofeedback of the pelvic floor, sensors are placed externally on the skin of the perineal area. With contraction and/or relaxation of the pelvic floor a visual and/or auditory stimulus will be prompted to help the child learn how to control these muscles.
Q. What if my child is nervous or embarrassed about pelvic floor therapy?
Pelvic floor therapy is tailored to each child, so if a child is nervous or anxious about toileting, bodily autonomy, or doctors visits in general the therapist will first look to establish a rapport with the child. Therapists will gradually introduce strategies, skills, and exercises/activities based on patient comfort and readiness. Therapists also look to make activities fun and engaging. Parents are encouraged to attend sessions. Biofeedback is only performed with both parent and patient consent.

What Clients Are Saying
Cheshire Fitness Zone has been wonderful. The office staff is very welcoming and informative and the OT that my son sees has a genuine interest in my son’s well-being. He always communicates well with me and makes sure to ease all of my concerns. My son loves coming to Cheshire Fitness Zone!
I love working at Cheshire Fitness Zone because the therapy team is always willing to collaborate and share different treatment strategies and therapy techniques. You are never at a loss for ideas!
“I can’t sing their praises enough. The patience and drive they have, and the love for what they do really show through. They have changed my daughter’s life already and we have only just begun. Transitioning my child to Cheshire Fitness was the best decision I made. Bri, Val, and the whole team are nothing but amazing.”
Cheshire Fitness Zone therapists offer hope, encouragement, and creativity. They deliver on persistence, personal gains, and individual growth because they genuinely care. In spite of working on the steps to tie his shoes for over six months at a different facility, at Cheshire Fitness Zone Erin never lost hope or let him quit. Although he had no idea each week she worked on skills that when put together would tie a shoe. She approached the idea of tying many times only to be met with complete resistance and totally shutting down. Then one day he came to me after his session and said, ‘Hey mom, guess what? I can tie my shoes.’ When I saw the pride in his eyes and the encouragement on Erin’s face I knew he had done it. It was one of the happiest moments of his childhood. What a gift…self-pride and independence.
Both of our sons have participated in physical, occupational, and speech therapy at Cheshire Fitness Zone. We make the forty minute trek to Cheshire three times per week because the therapists are like none other we have encountered. Our sons (4 and 5 years old) have received therapy since birth and I was so pleased to have found Cheshire Fitness Zone. Both of my kids have been challenged and nurtured by the therapists. They are so amazing with the kids and I am thankful for their dedication.
Everyone at Cheshire Fitness is always so friendly and welcoming. They provide a wonderful atmosphere for the children and are so supportive. The best gift anyone can give a parent is caring for his or her kid and helping his or her kid to live to their greatest potential and that is exactly what the therapists at Cheshire Fitness Zone do. They truly care and we will be forever grateful for the tools they have provided our child.
Highly recommend. The warm, loving atmosphere sets the tone for these highly motivated therapists to do their thing. The office staff is top notch as well!!
My son has greatly benefited from OT and PT at Cheshire Fitness Zone. The therapists are so patient and knowledgeable. The facility is also very impressive and fun. We look forward to seeing our son progress as we continue therapy.
We have been coming to Cheshire Fitness Zone for more than two years. The therapists are friendly, compassionate, and professional. Not only do they do a fabulous job with the therapy, but they also consider the individual behavioral needs for our son. They are caring while pushing him to achieve goals that at times he might feel he can do and he does. Thank you to Craig and the staff for all that you do!
